C.S. Lewis is one of my favorite Christian authors. He puts things so bluntly and so literally. This is one of my favorite quotes of his. And one that led me down a new path at the age of 34.
This Saturday, University of Houston-Downtown is commencing their College of Business students in graduation. I should be walking but I decided not to. Having the degree and celebrating with my friends and family earlier this year was all the recognition I needed.
Most of you know, however, 4 1/2 years ago I quit my job and made the decision to go back to school full time. My oldest daughter was starting high school and I knew we’d be discussing college soon. I didn’t want anything to hold her back, including the excuse to say “well you never went.”
Oh, the things we do for our kids! Honestly, I did it for me. I always wanted to go to college, and I did go after high school, for one semester… My mom was ready and willing to put a mortgage down on her house and pay for me, too. I decided to get married and have babies. My mom was disappointed. My ex even promised her we’d get me in school but it just never happened.
Fast forward 15 years, time flew! It was time to sh** or get off the pot.
My goal was to graduate college with a Bachelors degree before my oldest graduated high school. I just barely made it! She graduated in May of 2017 and by the grace of God, my last class ended June 2017.
Best decision I ever made! Now, do I wish I could go back, do the college life, dorm, sorority, at a normal teen age? Of course… but it is what it is. I’m thankful I was given the opportunity at all. Now I get to live vicariously through my daughter as she navigates through her college years. The ups, downs, and craziness of it all!
It is never too late… You will never be financially secure… The time is NOW! There are so many excuses we use. I was a mom of 4 and I did it, you can to! Maybe not today, maybe not next month, but it’s possible.
Thank you to my hubby and my family for all their patience, tutoring and support during those years.
